The Village
The Village of Arts & Humanities is a community art, nonprofit organization located in North Central Philadelphia. We are multi-faceted, professionally staffed, and governed by a community-based board of directors. Since 1986 we have won numerous local and international awards and citations for innovation and achievement, earning high marks within this community primarily consisting of low-income, underserved African American dwellers.
Through three basic pillars—Building Through the Arts, Shared Prosperity (an Economic Development Initiative), and Learning Through the Arts—the Village offers a broad range of community-based activities annually, with a particular interest in programs for youth.
Our work is described as provocative, muscular, and risky. We are not limited by convention but instead boldly redefine art to incorporate environmental justice, greening, and beautification, as well as community organizing.
Helping our nine teen members of Philly X-treme manage their own art-making will empower them to make savvy business decisions, become familiar with financial management, and begin to understand the ways in which all aspects of art-making—even the business aspect—are powerful tools for personal identity development.
